NORDIC YARDS – OFFSHORE BUSINESS AREA –

PLATFORM BORWIN BETA AND HELWIN ALPHA FOR SIEMENS AND TENNET – MILESTONES IN TRANSFORMATION PROCESS OF A TRADITIONAL SHIPYARD

Nordic Yards based in Wismar is one of the world's leading manufacturers of technologically sophisticated and innovative special ships. The company strategy is based on the areas of Arctic shipping and offshore. The shipyards combine innovative high-tech manufacturing with strict adherence to delivery dates and are characterized by an outstanding quality of their products.

Nordic Yards has many references in the engineering and construction of ice-breaking and winterized ships of any type. In addition the shipyards in Wismar und Warnemünde have increased their activities in the business area of offshore wind energy since the beginning of 2011. This includes the production of converter platforms, foundations, special ships of own design and offshore structures with focus on the economic benefit of the operator and environmental aspects. The installation ship „Nordic Heavy Installer“ is an example of the specific development and design of Nordic Yards.

Nordic Yards are the only shipyards in Germany that have already started building two sophisticated self-erecting transformer platforms for an eco-friendly and low-loss grid connection of offshore wind farms. The platforms BorWin beta and HelWin alpha will be produced for Siemens Energy and TenneT in divided construction at the two locations of Nordic Yards. They can be installed at sea without the use of a heavy-duty crane ship and are characterized by a completely closed construction and very convenient servicing. Beyond that there are optimum ambient conditions for maintenance personnel, components and systems due to a special desalination of room air.

Nordic Yards has clear locational and competitive advantages. Highly qualified and experienced engineering teams carry out research and development in the maritime and equipment-related field. Automated production processes that are not dependent on the weather as well as a high lifting capacity of cranes and transport capacity provide for a high productivity. The fortified loading quays are also suitable for heavy cargo.
