From the sea to your socket - An electricity system for wind en-ergy in the Baltic Sea

Renewable energies and Baltic offshore wind farms will soon make a major contribution to the future of power generation. But how can wind energy generated at sea be brought on shore? This is where 50Hertz Offshore GmbH (formerly VE BOG) comes in.

50Hertz Offshore is a Berlin registered subsidiary of the transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission GmbH. It builds and operates power lines and related equipment to connect off-shore wind turbines to electricity transmission and distribution systems. 50Hertz Offshore’s focus is on hooking up wind farms planned for the German part of the Baltic Sea.

Following careful preparation, construction works are now taking shape: The system connection for the EnBW Baltic 1 wind farm is scheduled to go live in 2010.

By connecting the Baltic wind farms to the energy system, 50Hertz Transmission and 50Hertz Offshore are making a major contribution to climate protection: Only after these wind farms have been linked to the onshore power system can this energy, generated with zero carbon emissions, be passed to the power system and on to consumers.
